For me,this translates into something different than the actual meaning. To me, it's a bout a soldier going away to war, leaving his girlfriend/wife back home. He gives her his sweater and she gives him her shirt. "...I sweat a lot and smell of dirt..." Obviously you're going to sweat a lot in the desert in a war zone and you don't always have access to running water to shower. I don't know, maybe that's just me. :)
