I'd say my interpretation is somewhat similar to dresnessness' although sans 'heaven'.
In short, the song seems to be describing a lifelong search to find meaning in, well, life. The first two sections seem to be describing a gradual building of pessimism and fatigue generated from a failure to find said meaning. Then near the end the narrator finally finds it, a reason to live, if you will. Of course by this point he is about to die (from old age or something else).
