I agree about the song being ambiguous, I believe almost any song has room for multiple interpretations, but I also strongly believe its about a romantic relationship. She refers to this person as the sun, so its obvious she adored them. She also stuck through everything with them, to a point where she learned to accept the pain of being let down and the false hope they gave her of things getting better. She wanted an 'end all be all' sign because she could let them go, but the need for one was a sign in itself. I think towards the end, she finally lets them know how let down she felt, looks to the person for an answer, as if maybe by saying something it will change their behavior, but again shes proven wrong.
I just came out of the same thing over Valentines Day. Its really hard to let go of someone go when you don't find anything to be the problem accept the fact they aren't wholeheartedly into you. You give it time thinking you can fix it, but you cant.
