Does anyone know? ......I thought I had read somewhere that the song was about a prostitute and that the male subject in the song was in love with her and wanted to be with and take care of her. Unfortunately - he wasn't able to afford her. I may very well be wrong about this. Does anyone else out there remember reading anything similar?
