I really see this as having the Speaker being an abstract like Thoughts or Doubts. Something along those lines. We all have doubts and fears, and those live inside of us, sometimes eat away at us, or simply fade away because we're not paying attention to them. Opinions and Ideals(which can both be as negative in content as a fear or doubt) are sort of the same way.
