I honestly think that this song is pure metaphor. My interpretation is of a person relating an epiphany of some kind (not necessarily religious, hence the metaphor of the church, choir, st. thomas) that may not have transformed his life at the time it happened, but the memory of it has been at work continuously since then (don't really know what it was, but I know it's still right there). Ultimately, I think that the main theme of this song speaks to spiritual awakening, healing, and clarity. Sometimes ppl need to have the shit scared out of them before they come to realize what is truly substantial and meaningful for them in their lives.
