I think that this song pretty much has the same meaning as "Let Me In". Without his family, the world is a terrible place. Dan just wishes he could come home. When he's home, being on tour or wherever he wants to go doesn't seem so bad. Everything seems so exciting, and the big city lights are enticing from his home, but
"...out here it's too damn bright
And your voice sounds so far away, so I respond to the delay
And I wait to hear you say to come home."
He obviously hates being away from his family (maybe his wife in particular, with this song?), but he has to keep touring.
Finally, he lets his wife/daughter know that he will always be there for them, though he might be thousands of miles away from them. He will always do anything that he can for them:
"I can't always be right there,
but I can get there soon
I can't always hold your hand,
But I will always love you"
Such a beautiful, beautiful song. When I first heard this song, I just went through a bad break-up, so I personally interpret it in a different way. Regretting the break-up, wanting to be with my ex-fiancee again, and realizing that my life was much better with her. I especially related to "I can't always hold your hand, / but I will always love you." This song had a profound effect on me when I first heard it... and it still does.
