To me this song is speaking of the people in the church who believe they are God's gift to mankind. They reel people in, not because they care, but because they are more concerned with their appearance and wish to be recognized for this (though they may be complete hypocrites).

I don't think Gotye is trashing the church, but rather the judgmental beings within the church that would like credit for any sort of growth. They seem to say all the right things, but there is an artificial edge to their words: "Just do as we say - and we won't hurt you"

These people would like to think that the lives of others are changing because of them, rather than because of the love of God: "Do you need a reminder - of the love that we gave you?"

Whatever the true meaning of this song, I love the lyrics Gotye has to offer. They make people think, usually for the better.

My Interpretation

LOL...and it's been HOW many decades since you were invovled with a church? And you were how old? Yes, obviously old enough to have a clue. LOL. If atheists wish to speak about churches, they need to get their self-centered asses into the pews before they open their big mouths. I promise never to speak as though I know how it is to be black. And you promise never again to speak about faith when you have none, and when your Sunday is spent helping only yourself. Ass. (Dear God, thank you for making me fallible so a can sin...

IllToast2That, when did Vannagurl say she was atheist? She never spoke against God, she spoke against the hypocritical Christians who make going to church unbearable.

Are you trolling right now?

IIIToast2That I'm sorry that you misunderstood my interpretation. I am very much a Christian and believe in the one true Creator and lover of our souls. Even Jesus recognizes the hypocrites within His Church, and is disgusted by them. They sought to glorify themselves, and spoke down to the very people Jesus intended to give his life for. I think Gotye is singing about the present-day Pharisees: the very people that are a poison to the Church, and could care less about anyone other themselves.
