See I'm so certain that this is sarcastically quoting people who think that scrutiny is useless. This song is called Endless Greed, to have a song about greed and to say that you don't care what other people say about you and that you're going to do whatever you want, has to be sarcasm.
It's the people who think that they can do whatever they want and buy and consume and have that stupid "idgaf" mentality that perpetuate the cycles of miners and big rigs that tear up the earth, use slave labor, kill animals, etc.
The land of endless greed is the 1st world where we all live in, buying things like True North from places like Best Buy (yes I'm being sarcastic).
"Out here in the lap of luxury, fortune bears no scrutiny" I'm just going to say this before anyone realizes it, those are going to be some misunderstood and very under-appreciated lyrics. What he is saying is that out here in the 1st world we can buy buy buy and no one will care because it's socially acceptable to purchase things even when they perpetuate harm.
I would be willing to bet good money that 95% of people who listen to this song will think that, "I don't really care what other people may say, I gotta go on living my life anyway." Will be literal, and not sarcastic. Ooh superficial thoughts.
Sorry to make this a long comment, but there's so much to say about this song. The part where he sings, "The poor don't have to struggle in dismal poverty, anyone can be the way they want to be" He means this to be heard in the same sarcasm as before. Some people are naive enough to believe that if you want to be happy, then you can be happy. And to translate that into BR lyrics: then the poor don't have to be poor because they can be however they want to be. Obvious fallacy in that the poor are poor partially because of what consumers buy half way around the world.
