I actually think the main theme with this song is the breakup. The alcohol issues he references are about coping with something that has just happened I believe. The reason I think this is the line:
"Replace with phrases like when you're leaving me."
But furthering on from that he says that he can't change and she's seen all of him "cute me wide open like landscape."
