"The album this song is on is a story about the loss of a person's mother and how he has such a difficult time dealing with it. It also get's into the sorrow of his father at her loss and how the tragedy tears them apart. An incredibly sad album, but still my favorite from this wonderful band."
Both the father and son continue to mourn her death. The son has reached the point where he can no longer stand the presence of his father because his grief is so overwhelming that it is dragging his son down. The son chooses to leave his father and chooses loneliness in exchange for some sense of normality and freedom from his guilt and grief.
