I think this song is obviously about a break-up. Like somebody mentioned in a previous comment, people expected them to not last, which is why he sings, "In the night I'm disappointed with your choice As I'm right outside your door And my face is on the floor," showing that he feels as if she chose the opinions of others' over him. "And you left me on the darker side of town Alone all by myself, no shadow spoken tongues Faintly familiar ones And they bled the truth And they screamed aloud that you were a liar. Yes a liar. Well you took advantage of me yet again Or so they said" I think maybe he had to walk through the town from her house or apartment and there were people around, but he was too disoriented, shocked, and upset to see all the details of them and to comprehend what they were saying, and through his mind he's replacing the words they were saying with what was going through his head at the time and what he thought of the woman now. "And I'd hang the moon for you. And I'd save the world for you" Obviously, this means that he'd do anything he could for her even though she no longer wants him, he will still forever love her. Then, he goes into the chorus, "And tonight and forever Tonight and tonight and forever. Well I am just a book Dusty on this shelf Worn and by myself And the words inside don't help. As I read my midnight pain Til you put me up again" This, too, is obvious. He is comparing himself to a beaten up book that nobody truly cares about enough to read, and the thoughts that he's thinking aren't helping him. He's trying to understand the pain he's feeling that he thinks will go away when she starts to use him again. "And the smile across my face is being forged It's nothing but a fake and it helps me to not think And I know that you're at home and on your mind is nothing about my brown hair and hazel eyes. I'm just trying to pass the time" He's going about life faking his happiness, although he cannot stop thinking about how she cares so little about him that she doesn't even think about him, and that's how he gets through the day, by thinking about her, even though they're negative thoughts. "And the tears all sing aloud, without making a sound 'You're a sucker, such a sucker." He knows he's crying and the fact that he's crying shows him that he's a sucker, or a baby, or a loser. "It seems as if you want what you can't get And I'm nauseous and I'm sick And I'll get into your mind so please get out of mine" The woman he's singing about took him for granted and this made him feel upset. He's also asking her to get out of his and, eventually, she'll realize the mistake she made by leaving him and won't stop thinking about it, but it will be too late because he hopes he will be over her by the time she realizes this.
