Autumn Leaves Lyrics

First of all, I absolutely love the song. It's very calm and relaxing, and I think the lyrics speak of a healthy attitude towards life and death in general.

"Do you ever wonder if the stars shine out for you?" "Is it that it's over or do birds still sing for you?"

I think these two lines are about afterlife, or at least a possibility of afterlife. It's a common theme that people who have passed away are shining down upon us from the sky. The line from the second chorus is a different take on this but it essentially carries the same meaning: is there or isn't there life after death?

"Float down Like autumn leaves Hush now Close your eyes before the sleep And you're miles away And yesterday you were here with me"

So the chorus to me is just about accepting death. Yes, we will all die eventually, it happens to everybody so we might as well get ready for it and use the time we have. And the last two lines are really eerie, I know I'm reading into it too much but we all have relatives who passed away and it's just so inexplicable that once they were alive, with us and now they're gone, nowhere to be found. It really do seems like yesterday.

Anyway, there are probably other things that could make sense based on the lyrics and everyone's free to interpret it however they want but this is pretty much what it means to me.
