Do people here just read the lyrics and try to guess at what it means? If you knew the artist and album, the meanings are pretty clear. The entire album is a story, and this is but one chapter. To try to take it out of place and ascribe some individual meaning to it outside the context of the whole album is the same as taking one stanza of a poem, or small slice of a painting, and trying to determine what the artist intended without looking at the rest of the work. Just read the lyrics for the whole album as a story and it'll all make sense.

He has always stated that he never reveals exactly what his songs mean, as he feels doing that would take away what the song means to somebody else. Yes, its part of a concept album, but it doesn't mean they can't relate to what is being said, and apply it to whatever situation they're going through.
