Cover art for Iscariot lyrics by Walk the Moon

Without the title, Iscariot, I would interested to see what people think this song means. If you aren't paying close attention, the name Iscariot is only mentioned once and can be missed. When I first heard it I thought it was about someone had made a poor life decision and a friend was describing the aftermath with a sense of sorrow for what happened.

Anyway, this song describes the paragon of beytrayal stories, that of Jesus Christ and Judas. The lyrics of Iscariot start with Judas as the speaker. Then the rest of the is Jesus's reply. In the song, Judas expresses his regret, saying "can't trust just anyone". Jesus's reply begins with the cryptic chorus, which if you don't know the name of the song, is abit obtuse. However, as described elsewhere, Jesus is talking about Judas's decision and what the consequences of it. In the second verse, Jesus describes what it really means to lose someone, losing not only that person, but also tarnishing the memories of that person. Jesus also explains how little Judas had grasped the consequence of his decision but went about it anyway. In the biblical story Jesus lost a close friend, and it was because of the decisions of that friend. In the lyrics, Jesus seems to still remember that sense of brotherhood they shared, which I found really amazing about this song. The references to Judas sound familial, in which Jesus considers Judas a brother and friend. In the bible, Jesus mentioned that 1 of the 12 will betray him. The line "you know you had it coming" speaks to his knowledge of Judas's temptations and eventual demise. It's a beautiful song, that even if you don't know what WTM is referencing, you still can feel the passion expressed in this song.
