writing this in 2013, it's obvious to me that we'll never go back to the days when songs were written like this. props to aretha for immortalizing a positive message with her divine voice.. this is a call to action for all men to treat their women as their equals. and not just because that's how men "bag" women, or hold on to women, but because that's what women deserve. she's not saying anything about buying your woman fancy clothes or expensive jewelry, just pay her in love, affection, and respect.
