For me, the song is a metaphor. The narrator/song writer is a sailor on the seas of his life, realizing finally that he is going to die soon enough ("moving towards the beyond"/"Realized I wasn't immortal"/"It's all coming back to me"). This song is a look back at his life, his feelings, and almost a tribute to what he's done, and ultimately the realization, as aforementioned, that he is going to die.
I also think it is interesting that he mentions not being given wings. I wonder if this is the writers way of saying that if he had wings he could have escaped all of this and lives his life differently, or that he could have gotten to "heaven" faster?
Those are just my thoughts as I listen to this now for the thousandth time without really wondering about the lyrics.
