Cover art for Breathe lyrics by Michael W. Smith

Not a huge fan of Christian music, but sometimes an artist or a song 'speaks' to us. This song is one of those for me. Many years ago I was told I needed to find my "dignity," but I didn't listen. And it's the only time in my life I allowed myself to be used. In everyone's life there comes that one moment of awakening. It's not that any specific action or word caused it, it just happens. I guess there's a trigger, but the trigger is unimportant, although symbolic. And you know that what you wanted and waited for will never be, no matter how much you want it or how often someone says you'll have it. Then comes the darkness, right before the mourning. For some of us who at times must fight off bouts of depession, it's songs like Breathe that help carry us through the daily routine of living...of getting washed and dressed for work, of faking smiles when we're around our families, of finding creative excuses not to spend time with friends, etc. Sometimes a song just speaks for us, as this one does for me. With God's grace I can and will get through any challenge life tosses my way. When someone chooses another during both the really bad times and the good times, it's time to find ones dignity...and breathe, although slowly. Good song, although I just had to submit a lyrics change due to the actual length being longer...
