I'm pretty sure this is about Shaley's battle with depression.
That being in the band was helping him and giving him a sort of high like the song says. But it never is enough to pull him out completely.

That he'd always wanted to be a rock star or something along those lines, and he was scared about how it would work out for him with him battling depression. And he just wanted it all to leave him.
