The word "Maitreya" seems to be distinct. The Ascended Master Lord Maitreya from what little I know, is the "coming Buddha" & "cosmic christ".
I had thought that the maypole was a pagan tradition, and so I don't get the relationship. I expect that understanding the ritual behind the maypole may be revealing, indicating perhaps that the song is an invocation for the Christ energy (not Jesus) to descend & enlighten the body/vehicle of the participant/singer.
