Tom really paints a vivid picture with this song, his vocals make the song IMO. Anyway to me it feels like a tale of young love growing in to true love; a young couple discovering each other before they truly know themselves, feeling like it could last forever and realizing it takes hard work and both would need to work to make it last, because together they can make it worth it.
Definitely agree with you. I also think there's a slight metaphor for the life of the band as well. Especially in the last verse:

It’s a cry from the past we have been through a lot
Every year has been great and a few have been tough
And the kids they will reach for the stars up above
We’ll sit and relax as we’re cheering them on
All the ropes to the life from the crib to the grave
We started alone in the end we’re okay
It’s a cry from the past we have been through a lot
Every year has been great and a few have been tough
And the kids they will reach for the stars up above
We’ll sit and relax as we’re cheering them on
All the ropes to the life from the crib to the grave

I agree with both of you, and the metaphor for the band's carrier. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that they are an independent band now, and it's all new to them.
