The lyrics in this song make me think of slavery, as she talks about a 'dark workhorse', who fell by the side of the road, presumably of exhaustion, and then she goes on to talk about how they've lost all their youthfulness, and therefore usefulness - a slave too old to work? Useless!
However the analogy could be considered fabricated as the lyrics could literally be referring to a workhorse, who you can kinda consider slaves anyway ;D
