Caterpillar as in the insect, or as in the brand of earthmoving machinery?
I'm tending to think the machinery considering the car references - "engine was still running" "smashed a window" etc, but I'm aware those references could also be about someone asphyxiating themselves with a car exhaust... but genereally people don't commit suicides as a team...
The "rumour" about the reason behind their death being a "serial killer" seems odd and clumsy - generally their lyrics are better than this. When you hear of a tragedy - ie. two young people dying - the first thing that comes to mind is not that they've been murdered by a serial killer; it seems like a strange rumour...
