At the time, Siouxsie and The Banshees couldn't get a major record deal because of their controversial lyrics and sound, and a lot of labels wanted to limit what the Banshees sound was, thus making them more radio friendly.
At the same time the Banshees wanted a record deal and thankfully they did get it in the end without having to lose their identity.
