With respect to the person who talked with the band, to me it is clearly a love song about a woman who - despite his intense love for - he isn't meant to be with for various reasons. This song haunts me like some others as it speaks directly to a relationship I was in for 6.5 years which ended in divorce. Just listen to the emotion in his voice. Not much more to say.
