A woman on a train who thinks about several things, about a broken relationship?!
Her man got sick and went away (he doesn't want her to know: "I couldn't get you to say, Why you wouldn't let me come?") and now she goes to his funeral??? So then that "one thing" is his/the life itself?!
Or he went away and started something new with somebody else. So "one thing" is love?! But why is she on a train then or isn't she?
So I'm a little confused; some help please :)
I believe the song is about a man who has abandonment issues because of his father's death. She understands, but wished he would realize that the love they shared was the key to everything. The "one thing" is love. In the middle of the song, she has accepted that love wasn't enough and that he won't come back. By the end of the song, he has come back after realizing what he left behind. Notice she says love was "chasing" and "saving" them. The key to understanding the song is to how she describes the...

Also, in the end, she's speaking to him (as he is in her presence). She wants him to hold and comfort her. Hopefully she'll make a video. I think it would be beautiful.
It's funny because I also though that she was the one on the train, but as I looked into the song further I realized that she never actually says that she's the one on it. And it in fact makes more sense to surmise that in the beginning Alicia is asking her lover how it is to leave without her on that train in the beginning. Also I don't think he's dying or anything, but his dad maybe did with the line "Your old man lived in the sky". Frank Ocean, who wrote the song, puts many religious themes in...
