This is a puzzling song, I spent some time thinking about it, and here's my theory:
I believe that this song is about someone who has set their priorities of sex and drugs above god
"A grand blank look on your face
When you learned it was over
Do you ever question why
What could have been different
We were so comfortable living in each other's skin"
I don't think this is an ended relationship, I believe the person has died, or is dying.
"You should have thought about then for now"
"But I've got to leave
I've got to leave"
The person rejected god.
I believe the "I" is the singer speaking for either god or jesus. "I was dying from within," "I don’t mean anything"
Here's where it gets puzzling:
God, drugs, and sex don’t mean a thing
To you now do they now baby
I think that God doesn't mean a thing to you, sex is there but is meaningless, and drugs are used so casually that no one really thinks about how much of a big thing they are. - The person doesn't think about God, doesn't think about what sex is and is intended for, and just takes drugs without thinking? AKA. meaningless, doesn't mean a thing.
Did you not hear me coming around alone
Did you not see me coming along the way
Where the bright lights are leading you astray
Where the bright lights to grant you a way from your love
Ooh ooh ooh
Don't leave anymore
^^ I think the above explains itself following my theory
The icing on the cake is this line: "Would you change it all for me"
Anberlin are a christian band, so I guess this makes sense. Any other theories?
