I see this song as wanting to have and explore that deep emotional connection we can have with another being.

"I'd play til tears ran down your cheek and chin"

There is another person there. I do not think they are singing of The Spirit, nor of God because of this.

"We could write the saddest song" I see as that desire to have that connection. But there is another very important part of this song.

"Sometimes I indulge my every whim Piece by piece I build the cell I'm in But I only stay here long Enough to write the saddest song"

So the saddest song I see as... the human condition. Because it can be a good thing or a bad thing. The saddest song is just Life.

"I'd hit the keys that make your spirit swell" becomes a part of this song. Obviously joy for something.

Now the chorus...

"I dream't I stood on a hill that I wish was a mountain to look back on all my accomplishments. Well they must have been small, because I couldn't seem to find them, so I took a leap off of the precipice."

Again, if we're dealing with the human condition: wanting to accomplish things. Looking back and noticing that you haven't done anything outstanding. It's normal, healthy. Part of life. I don't see the leap as a negative thing.
