I never realized how deep these lyrics are. "Battle scars" are just scars that are leftover after endless fights with his girlfriend. He knows that it isn't working out, he knows that he is fighting for something that isn't worth it... but he does it anyway. It remind me of how alot of people feel in relationship that they are "stuck" in because of the "fear of the unknown".
