I believe that this song is about the inevitability of life and death; we live, we die.
It describes the idea that life is short and that we should just be happy, it brings attention to the fact that when we feel bad or depressed, that there are other people out there feeling the same; we aren't the only ones:
(Another day another life
Passes by just like mine
It's not complicated
Another mind
Another soul
Another body to grow old
It's not complicated
Another tear
Another cry
Another place for us to die
It's not complicated)
That being said, I also feel that this song describes the feeling we have when a loved one isn't around (due to being away, death, break up, etc). It is described in such a way that is perceived as common to everyone (the recurring use of 'another', telling the listeners that despite the loneliness they feel, they are not alone and they are not the only ones.
This telling of common emotions can also apply to other feelings such as depression. The lyrics talk about life passing us by and wasting time on love that never works out, which are quite depressing. Also the lines about birds still singing and stars shining, can be seen to be describing nostalgia; when we are young, it seems like everything is set in place for us, that everything will go well for us and we can't wait to grow up, but when we get older the realities of life kick in and we become overwhelmed with the work, financial and social stresses of life, and we begin to wish we were a kid again.
I believe that the chorus talks about things being simple and predictable again, like the simplicity and predictability of leaves falling in the Autumn. "Your miles away and yesterday, you were here with me" talks again about nostalgia, about how quickly time flies 'it seems just like yesterday'.
I don't know how much sense this made, and I am sorry if it doesn't make any at all! These are just thoughts I have had about this beautiful song.
