All At Once Lyrics

I'm surprised there aren't more comments about the narrative within this incredibly emotion-evoking piece. At first, the story seems simple to grasp - her marriage or love has fallen apart, left, and cascaded onto her daughter too. But those suggestive, wonderfully chosen words in the chorus leaves me wondering.

  1. Who is she talking to when she sings "All at once I hear your voice and time just slips away"? It isn't her daughter obviously, and not her husband or her daughter's daddy who left them. Is it her mom or her own dad? Sounds like someone from an earlier time in her life, who has passed-on or something. Who?
  2. "Nothing they can say could hold me here...." Going away to a more peaceful place, free from feelings and burden of pain. Escaping, leaving. Suicide?

@meoozik I think meoozik nails it. I wonder, though, is this a personal experience of Bonnie Raitt? Maybe that of a troubled friend? Ms. Raitt is still with us, so if it was her own ordeal, she was able to make it through a very grim struggle.
