This song is the perfect song for anyone who's been in failed serious relationship or more specifically, a failed marriage.

"Sick with regret, you sputter out. Your flame swallowed in doubt. Light the cigarette and take a breath, the smoke inflates your chest and thins your blood so you bleed less inside Left with the mess that came about, when you chose to live without On foreign shores you fight or die Life's thrown before your eyes and takes it's toll on your calloused empty soul"

The person is living with regret, they light a cigarette (or any drug in this case) and take a deep breath to kill the pain they feel inside. They're left with the consequences of ending the relationship; life feeling so foreign now, and they are seeing the hard side of life. You tend to feel very empty and cynical of life when a good relationship goes bad..

"How long, how long will we be desperately alone, how long, how long? How long, how long will we have to pay for what we've done, how long, how long?"

This to me is almost like one person is shouting out to their ex, a shout they wish the other could hear, but they don't: How long will we feel this way? How long until I find someone else? How long will it take to recover from this failed relationship?

"'What we would give to feel alive!' Throught the fog, a muffled cry, 'The anchor's lost and so am I' We fall victims to the tide I'm free to drift and free to die on my terms now"

The two are in intense emotional pain, and they wish they didn't feel "dead" and lost. The line "we fall victims to the tide" could be a reference to the high rate of divorce. The tide of course being divorce. "Free to drift" could mean I'm free to start seeing new people, and "free to die on my terms now" is like someone saying, "I no longer live for you, I live for me".

Wow.. this song hits close to home for me.
