I thought to myself, with Fred being a 'minister,' as he calls himself, and me being a spiritual kind of guy, I thought, I can't predict the future and I can't see inside of any people or anything, but what if Jesus were faced with Fred Phelps? How would a conversation like that go, between Jesus and Fred Phelps? So I thought about that for awhile ... and it seemed to me the right thing to do when I wrote the song, all things being equal, it felt like the most poetic thing to do to write the song as a 50s doo-wop love song to Fred from Jesus."
