I think shap88 is spot on, but hasn´t specified it enough. This song seems to be a metaphore for the way Jim James sees life, as a risky ride at a fair. No matter what you do in life, there is always a lot of risk involved and often the line between success or failure and death or life is thin.

I was just listening to this and I was literally in tears over it, that beautiful is it when you fully understand it. For me it reinforces the belief that it really is up to me to make something out of my life, no matter the risk involved because refusing to go for what I want has its costs as well: lack of lust for life for instance and there might be even more risk in that plus in the end I am the only one that really cares what happens in my life since I have to live every second of it!

Also life flies by pretty fast, so even if I crash and burn it will all be over too soon. Part of the trill in life is taking risks in quick succession and going for what you want, so why would you want to eliminate the dangerous aspects/risks from your life if what they really do is make you feel alive?
