Well to me, futz means "do whatever while I'm gone", and that's exactly what they did, and they did everything except what they expected Julie to do ( get fuel). And they maintain hope that Julie is gonna come back with fuel (even though she probrably isn't). Symbolic to me that you shouldn't leave 100% faith on one person to do one crucial thing or you're gonna be right back where you started in the very beginning (on a dark and isolated planetoid with a rocketship completely out of fuel). Always have a backup plan in life.
