Kind of what MEra said, but to add to that I almost think there is something to do with the Crusaders going to Jerusalem on a religious escapade. Very christian sounding and I'm almost sure it is about a crusader questioning meanings of things, but keeping his faith in God. "The piper inside, can't you feel him calling" seems like God.
