I was listening to this song and suddenly I had an idea - maybe the song is about the shadow aspect of the unconscious (according to Jungian psychology). The shadow doesn't manifest unless the concious self is weakened. If so, then it tries to take control and "make up the ugly thoughts" . It can also manifest in dreams, if a person's shadow is very dark then maybe it could produce nightmares too.
