The fact that the protagonist and his girlfriend fought could be their political ideology differences (One of them supports the migration, one doesn't.) "We watched the regulars rush the big hotels"-- Could mean the Floridians that are scared by the sudden swarm of new people. "The sound of thunder" could be the commotion caused by the event.
