The words, to me, also point to a freedom from religious captivation. Free thinkers are often what Atheists or Non-Theists call themselves. People that think for themselves and don't allow religion to govern their decisions, but rather their own ideals and reason.

LOL...so if you don't believe in something (rather, you have a conviction of another sort) you're a "free thinker." I just love the silliness of some atheists, who are the usually the same ones who will fight for baby whales and medical research lab animals, but who think nothing of taking the life of growing humans who have brain waves, heartbeats, and their parents' DNA markers. Sorry, but for as much sh*t as Christians take from the non-Christian world, they appear to be the "free thinkers" for not caving into society's secular popularity and pressure.
