Instead, he's being literal with the idea that drugs can creep into your life, and start taking the place of the most fundamental necessities (water, breathing). What solidifies this idea for me is the line, "So I'll be your liquor. Demons will drown and float away". Often, or typically I should say, you hear people drink to get rid of the demons.
