While it seems he needs or wishes for company or companionship, he realizes all along that he and his journey are one in the same, and nothing is real because it's in his mind. He discovers the purpose of life is to discover and actualize the deepest desires of his/our minds [though maybe simply understanding them is enough imho]. He implies that the rest of us are profoundly lost and will never know the depths of what could be, because we are figuratively asleep and oblivious to this fundamental truth.

What if they want to imply life is like living in a dream itself and by living in actual society is like we were sleeping, in a dream, unaware of other things that just "escape us", like they say. I was thinking these ghosts could be people or things who might represent what we leave behind during life just because we decide not to give them a further look and we only see them in a prejudiced stereotyped...

It seems to me that these interpretation could also fit with the lyrics.
"We only know what we see cause we're always fast asleep". We only believe what we see, with our eyes, what we can touch and explain through our brain, senses and consciousness. And then they say we're always fast asleep as if we were in a numb state, oblivious to other things that might be happening as well.
