I always thought of this as a light and jovial song as a child, it's usually done in america upbeat and bright. when i discovered the history of the song, it's incredibly dark and sorrowful. it's a funeral dirge immortalizing the scottish dead during the rebellion wars 1680's. when the british crushed the rebellion, the scot fighters who werent killed were taken down to london to watch the leaders publicly hanged, then they were forced to march all the way back to scotland and many were executed along the way. "you take the high road" refers to dying and returning to scotland in spirit, and "i'll take the low road" refers to those who had to march back.

Ah,is today not the anniversary of the execution of William Wallace? Thank you.
