I think this song is also about Michelle Malone, whom Amy dated for some time, not sure how long. Malone had just gotten a big record deal with a major label, Arista, that tried to change her - Ray was commenting on this. later Malone dropped the contract and went out on her own, and stated that the label tried change her into a more commercially appealing cliche - I would also assume that being closeted was an issue that all music artists struggled with at the time. Even Indigo Girls were semi-closeted, even though they never admitted it - it was a don't ask don't tell issue.
