I am currently dating a very bright man I believe has bipolar (but who takes medication), and I was once friends with someone also very bright who has bipolar (non-medicated). The song talks about the "inner voice" and stealing from him the sun. The darkness is an emotional darkness. The lyrics indicate that he laughs whenever he believes someone thinks s/he has him all figured out since he doesn't even know himself, especially when under the effects of mania. Interesting song. A fascinating disorder, but scary at times for the person and for those who love him/her.
