This song, to me, is about trying to move on from somebody. The "chain" is an emotional link to someone. They're trying to move on, but the "chain won't break". So they still think about them and they're unable to move on, or "let go". I'm not entirely sure about the faces part. Maybe he's in such an emotional funk that everyone looks the same? I'm not sure.
