"If I'm gonna live, I'll lift my life, darlin' to you."
This song has a deep meaning to me after my best friend died suddenly from a heart attack at 31 last year. (No drugs, in case anyone was wondering, most likely congenital.)
Every bit of me ached and begged for it not to be true when I found out, and no amount of wishing or praying could change it. For a long time, I was very depressed - she was my "Bobby Jean" - and I almost chose to follow her where she went. After a while, though, I realized that there was a legacy she'd left behind, and I had a duty to step up and take her place.
I give my life over to fulfill some of the work she left behind, and to accomplish the things we talked about. It gives me a sense of purpose that I lacked after she was gone.
