I love this song and I am in the minority here on the meaning. The obvious interpretation is about a girl, but I can't help but catch the first first "Drop the Needle Again".
This song could easily be about a recovering heroin addict. What happens during with drawl from heroin? There hands shake and he's telling himself, drop the needle again. dance with your ghost, perhaps he lost a friend who OD'd, and he knows he cant' stay the same (an addict) but he also can't leave it.
Turn the record over is just another way of saying you gotta change, you gotta do something new.
I do think Brian has the intent of this basically being about a girl, but that is the beauty of lyrics, you can interpret it the way you want.
I've ever interpreted it as his friends are sick of him playing the same song over and over again!! I've done that and people are like, aren't you sick of this song yet!!!!
Are you serious? I mean I get the needle/heroin connection a little bit, but really? It's even called 45. How do you listen to TGL and not know what a 45 is? It's a RECORD. The symbolism is really straight forward here. Needle, 45, turn the record over. . .

I guess, "drop the needle again" is in reference to "And the song just keeps on repeating" on an old phonograph..
