I see it as being about a person who is, at their core, a thoughtful pessimist. They enjoy being happy, but are dragged down by their pessimism (darkside), which is beautiful because it's well thought out, instead of just being a pessimist for the sake of itself. However, the person knows that their pessimism is destroying both their self and his relationships with people, which is ultimately more important than the 'theology of their pessimism'.
It's a truly beautiful song. One of The Crime's best.
