I immediately read these lyrics and thought it was word perfect description of living with recurring bouts of depression or feeling a bit blue, because of mainly the line "When things that once were beautiful are bland"... Its kinda upbeat in that the person when writing is starting to feel normal again and doesn't want the feeling to go, I especially liked the bit about "In truth there is no better place to be than falling out of darkness still to see" but in my mind the writer is aware that despite feeling so very euphoric and happy that he / she is over the last bout they know deep down its only temporary, and wish they could just trap it in this moment and not let go.. just my interpretation...

I think that's pretty much it. "When things that once were beautiful are bland" references one of the big symptoms of depression (anhedonia). And there's the line "remind us how we used to feel, before when life was real" which questions what is the 'normal' state, whether depression or happiness is a more true feeling.

The main thing I'd add is that this song is also partly directed at a partner (and perhaps other friends/family). I think "hold on" also refers to their relationship, trying to get through this bout and fix their problems....
