I would just like to say I was introduced to this song about 6 years ago, didn't know all of the words & just wanted to look them up. This song has always moved me & it does even more so now. My grandmother (that I was very close to) passed in 1990 & it still hurts & it was due to Lung Cancer as well....it is more loved than before. :)

@bchop I only signed up to this site to comment on my opinion of the meaning. I always felt it was about somebody considering considering suicide and it had been discussed a number of times with friends as a misunderstood song.
